TOP FINISHES IN 2008 FT LAUDERDALE TO KEY WEST RACE
Rodger Martin boats, Stuart Williams' Class 40 "Gwaihir" and Stu Hebb's Aerodyne 38 "Thin Ice", both posted 1st-place finishes at the 2008 Ft. Lauderdale to Key West Race. This was Gwaihir's first long distance race, and she perfomed wonderfully in the big breeze and seas. Thin Ice chalks up another victory for her race resume. Well done!
Stuart reports; "We had a wonderful sail tight reaching with the Genoa for the first legs averaging around ten knots or so. But we were able to turn the corner before the shift in wind and were able to beam reach with the Code 0 doing between 17 and 23 knots for the last half of the race. It was a good test with top speeds reaching 23.2 kts in 23 to 28 kts of breeze with the gusts building to 30 knots. With the reef only a 1/2 mile or less to leeward it makes for some interesting sailing. But being able to fly the Code 0 made the difference and we won our division fairly easily. I heard that after we got our chute up, our boatspeed was as fast as the TP 52's. I never saw below 17 knots for over 6 hours and most of that was at 20 knots steady with a top speed of 23 knots."

| | | OUTWARD BOUND 30 EXPEDITION BOAT - FIRST TWO BOATS LAUNCHED
The first two Outward Bound Hurricane Island 30 expedition boats have been launched and taken to the seas on their first course, a one-week trip off the Maine coast with 12 of Gary Jobson's "All Star" high-school sailors. The trip was a huge success, and Jobson with the help of a full film crew collected footage for an upcoming PBS presentation and for an Outward Bound publicity film.
The Outward Bound Wilderness Program will soon be replacing their entire fleet of 30' sailing / pulling boats; they have served the program well for 40 years. The boat is designed to challenge eight crew with sailing, coastal navigation, outdoorsmanship, and teamwork over a 1-4 week expedition. She will be a wonderful boat for experiencing the wilderness!
| | | AMERICA 3 IN PALM BEACH - INSTALLATION A SUCCESS!
The Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach, Florida hosted Bill Koch's 1992 Cup Boat, America3, for five exciting weeks of public display, hung on rod rigging in similar fashion to our previous exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Sadly her time spend on display was short-lived (only five weeks) and she is now under wraps in Portsmouth, RI, eagerly awaiting the next destination!
